CMU 60th Anniversary
World Master's
Watercolor Exposition
(January 6-31, 2025) is
an international
watercolor art
exhibition on the
occasion of the 60th
anniversary of Chiang
Mai University: "Lanna
Landscape" is an art
project organized by
the Faculty of Fine
Arts, Chiang Mai
University. It is a
story of watercolor
art, which is the first
project organized in
Chiang Mai Province.
Associate Prof. Udom Chimpakdee from the Faculty of Fine Arts,
Chiang Mai University, is the project owner who wants to create
an impact on Thai society. His interests are both painting and
sculpture, as a lecturer at the university with important
sculptures in Bangkok. Having worked on sculptures with China,
he sees the importance of the watercolor exhibition project with
the collaboration of famous artists in Thailand and invited master
artists from Thailand and abroad, as well as new watercolor
artists who were selected to join the event. They had the
opportunity to meet for the first time in Chiang Mai Province.
Eng-on Homsuwan is a World Master watercolor artist who
produces quality watercolors for Silpakorn University. She used
to be a lecturer at Silpakorn University and a special lecturer
teaching watercolors, allowing university-level work in Thailand
to reach the world.
In this event, there will be an invitation and exhibition of works
by national artists. As well as qualified watercolor artists in
various fields who received great cooperation. They began to send
their works for participants to admire. And the important part of
the event was inviting many master watercolor artists of Thailand,
famous watercolor artists, to join the events, and artists from
almost every province, more than two hundred people, to join the
exhibition and demonstrate their works, including artists who
were selected from the submission of theirwork
IWM (International Watercolor Masters) is an organization of
watercolor artists based in England, world-class masters, with Mr.
LaFe Sattha Homsawat, a member of IWM, coordinating the
exhibition and demonstration, which invited approximately 13
people to join the event to celebrate the university's heritage
through the exhibition of world-class and local watercolor
artworks. This event emphasizes the culture and creativity of
Lanna, which is in line with the university's strategic agenda for
sustainable development and the creation of a creative brand
within the region. This exhibition aims to highlight Chiang Mai as
a "Creative Lanna Platform" that combines art, culture, and
design.
In late October 2024, I had the opportunity to learn about the watercolor exhibition organized by the Faculty of Fine Arts,
Chiang Mai University. I had the opportunity to talk with Ms.
Suthanee Pawijit, the project coordinator.

Who is the main target group of this exhibition?
SP.
The main target group is students, lecturers, staff and
personnel of Chiang Mai University. Watercolors are easily
accessible to people, can be touched and felt. People will not feel
embarrassed to come and see the artwork.

Does the exhibition want to attract students, local artists,
tourists or the general public?
SP.
Watercolors under the theme of Lanna Landscape will
reflect the roots of Thai culture through architecture, temples,
traditions, culture and way of life that both Thai and foreign
artists reflect through watercolors, helping to emphasize the
cultural richness of Thailand. It is a way to promote tourism.

What is the main purpose of this exhibition?
SP.
The main purpose is to convey the aesthetic beauty from the
transmission of Thai and foreign artists' work to people in society.

What will the activities or formats of the exhibition be? Will it
be a display of works by local artists, to inspire the new
generation or to promote art tourism in Chiang Mai?
SP.
The highlight of this exhibition will be a demonstration of
watercolors before the exhibition to promote the work through
three topics that are challenging for the artists as follows:
- Experimental Watercolor at the Faculty of Fine Arts Chiang Mai
University, November 27, 2024
- Floral Watercolor/Still live at Ingka Gallery, Doi Saket District,
Chiang Mai, December 7, 2024
- Innovation Watercolor at Makok Art Space, Nam Phrae
Subdistrict, Hang Dong District, Chiang Mai
There will be a CMU-WMW 2025 honorary plaque for 20 Thai
artists selected by a panel of Thai and international judges to
encourage watercolor artists.
And during January 8-10, we will have a seminar by watercolor
artists, a joint watercolor demonstration by Thai and
international artists.

Are the venue and budget ready for the event? How will the
success of the pilot project be measured?
SP.
The main budget for this project comes from Chiang Mai
University.

The exhibition will be held at the Art and Culture Hall, Chiang
Mai University.
CMU-WMW will be the first branding in the Thai watercolor
industry that can connect with watercolor organizations abroad in
the future.
