Focus on Architecture

The Photography of Jon Rendell

Every two years since 2013 I have set a theme for a 365-day photo blog. My first was '25' RADIUS' which referred to the size of my apartment. All photos were taken from within the confines of my flat.

A 2015 project,'Is This Frisco?', showcased lesser known aspects of San Francisco.

'Wall & Ground' (2017), consisted of what I like to call 'wallscapes' and 'groundscapes' where a wall or the ground becomes a canvas for the light and shadows that strike it.

'See Levels Rise' (2019), centred around climate change and shoreline photography. It began in the San Francisco Bay Area and concluded with Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay when I moved home to Melbourne after 25 years living in San Francisco.

'The Atheist Photographer' (2021), tackled secular humanist themes.

'Portraits of Flora' (2023) focused on the intrinsic beauty of plants and flowers.

My blog for 2025 will be 'Focus on Architecture' and here's a preview.

Jon Rendell was born into an auteur/photog family in Melbourne, Australia, in 1957 and grew up around cameras and film. He honed his craft under renowned photographer Athol Shmith at what is now Swinburne University (Prahran Campus, Melbourne). He was always captivated by shadows and finds himself hard-wired to focusing on the transitory, abstract shapes that come and go with the available light. For more of his photography in Scene4, check the Archives.
